SKBRU MENCIPTA NAMA

By RAZALI PILUS

TAMPIN: In Gemencheh, near here, is a golf course with only seven holes. It belongs to SK Bukit Rokan Utara, the first school in the country, and a rural school at that, to “own” a golf course.
The initiative of the school to establish the golf course on 4.05ha has enabled children of Felda settlers studying there to indulge in a game often associated with the elite.

Sharpening their skills: Pupils working on the swing during the training programme at their school’s golf course. — BernamaHeadmaster Abdul Rahman Abdul Samad hit on the idea of a golf course after the school emerged champion for three consecutive years from 2004 in the national under-12 cricket tournament under the school’s cricket development programme. “The success of the cricket programme gave me the idea to start a golf development programme,” he said.
He said he subscribed to the Malay saying “melentur buluh biar dari rebungnya (to shape bamboo, one must do it from the shoot),” meaning the best time for children to acquire a discipline is when they are still young.

Abdul Rahman said clearing the jungle for the golf course began in 2004 with the collaboration and assistance of the Felda management and the Tampin district council. He said it cost about RM16,000 for the clearing work. In January 2005, 20 pupils from Years One to Six were selected to undergo training from 5pm on Mondays to Fridays, and between 8am and noon on weekends. Abdul Rahman said initially, the school could only make available two sets of junior golf clubs and 36 balls, which the pupils used on a rotation basis. “As the cost of the golf balls was high, the pupils even played with oil palm seeds,” he said. The school's efforts paid off. Several of its golfers won in tournaments at the level of the Negri Sembilan Malaysian Schools Sports Council in 2005, 2006 and this year, he said. He said 30 golfers were undergoing training under coach Zainal Bador, with advisory services provided by the Seremban International Golf Club (SIGC). Among the outstanding players are Nur Adila Norsam, Siti Nur Izwani Othman and Nur Aniza Masri, who have been selected for the national junior development programme by the Malaysian Golf Association at the SIGC. Abdul Rahman said the school received an allocation of RM30,000 from the state sports council in 2005 and 2006, and RM20,000 this year to buy equipment, pay the coaches and maintain the golf course. – Bernama

A heart-to-heart talk that turned fruitful with parents

10th February, 2007

The Malaysian Cricket Association's "Meet-The-Parents' dialogue on Saturday at the Kinrara Cricket Academy was so much fruitful.

In a two-hour closed door session, MCA president YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar and vice president Mahinda Vallipuram briefed an estimated 30 parents of the National Under-19 squad of the developments that are going to take shape in the coming months leading up to 2008 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

Also on hand to answer queries were national director of coaching Michael John Bailey, Under-19 coaches Shahidul Alam Ratan from Bangladesh and Sri Lankan Thushara Kodika, and team manager Mohammed Iqbal Ali.

A complete '2008 World Cup programme' has been worked out for the 32 members of the Under-19 centralised training squad which among others is placement of players from schools in Penang, Perak and Johore under one roof in Kuala Lumpur so as not to disrupt the training programme.

However, the immediate concern of MCA is placing these players in KL schools.
Parents were also informed that the 18 members of the squad currently involved in the triangular series with Sri Lanka and England are also given 60 total hours of tuition classes under the guidance of qualified teachers during the on-going series.

"It was a positive sign as we wanted the parents of the players to be with us as we embark on preparing the team for the World Cup," said Mahinda. "MCA need the blessings of the parents to carry out our programme. It would have been difficult if they are not informed of it and with so much understanding now we can implement what has been planned."

"I am glad the turnout was good. I would like to have such sessions with the parents every four months if possible so that we can keep them informed of what happening."

They came from as far as Johore Baru down south and Kuantan in the east coast. Felda Bukit Rokan Utara, Gemencheh (Negri Sembilan) village chief Mohamed Sharif whose son Shafiq is the first choice wicketkeeper, gave his views on matters relating to welfare of cricket players upon completion of their Form Five examinations.

He was also concerned on the upcoming SPM examination this year and what MCA have in mind for his son and the other players as well. Shariff, however, was a contented dad when told the national cricketing body is currently holding talks with local universities and also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Royal Military College .

"We are talking to the Universities and colleges to accept players who meet the minimum qualification but due to the intense competition do not get selected. This will be a thing of the past. MCA is very much concerned on the welfare of the players too," Mahinda told the gathering.
Another parent, whose son is studying down south, however, surprised MCA officials when he thanked national selectors for having the confidence in his son and chided those clubs who masked themselves under the banner of "Project Squad" but played doubled standards when it came to selection.

"I am very happy that my son's hard work in training and performance on the pitch is recognized by the MCA selectors. There should not be any form of pilih kasih (favouritism) when doing selection." said the irate parent.

Well, all that goes well ends well and at the end of the day, its cricket that breeds success.
